Clear Proof that Building “Green” Transmission Lines Will Increase Burning of Coal

We have heard a lot of wind coming out of FERC and the National Resources Defense Council about how we need more high voltage transmission lines to bring land based wind power to cities (while ignoring offshore wind resources).

Here is a link to a slide show from a June 2010 presentation by Robert Wendling and Roger Bezdek that demonstrates clearly how greenwashed projects like PATH will really do.

The presentation ends with a warning: “Reality check ahead.”  The presenters’ conclusion is that all new transmission lines, no matter how “green” they claim to be will give new coal-fired generation new access to customers, leading to increased burning of coal for electric power in the US.

When you hear talk about how we need new high voltage transmission lines to enable a green economy, go back and look at this presentation.  “Reality check ahead” indeed.

There are some problems with the Wendling/Bezdek presentation.  Go to my next post to learn more about them.

  1. Perhaps if we figure out a way to build coal-fired plants 10 miles offshore, we can turn this thing around… 😉

I’m not sure why they used mini-money though… I’ve still got some BIG money left over from the PATHata. I think that would be more appropriate.
