FirstEnergy Announces Coal Plant Dumping on WV

The WV subsidiaries of OH-based FirstEnergy have announced their intent to dump their high cost coal plant on WV’s Mon Power customers.  In the power point slide show shown to the PSC this week, FirstEnergy says the plan to “sell” 80% of the Harrison Power Station to Mon Power will result in a 2% rate increase for Mon Power’s residential customers.  In past public statements, FirstEnergy has tried to hide this fact by claiming that overall rates won’t rise, but all other categories of Mon Power rate payers, such as industrial customers, but residential rate payers will see a 2.1% rate increase (slide 13 of the FirstEnergy power point).

Pam Kasey over at Grounded has an excellent update on FirstEnergy’s plans and Consumer Advocate Byron Harris’ suggestion that the WV PSC require FirstEnergy to prove that their plan to raise rates is the least expensive alternative for fixing their claimed power generation shortfall.
