New U. of Delaware Study Shows What 99.9% Solar & Wind Powered PJM Would Look Like

Here is a study that was just published in The Journal of Power Sources that modeled PJM’s system using only wind and solar power and modest amounts of grid storage capacity.  This study shows how it can be done.  Here are the highlights noted on the first page of the monograph:

< We modeled wind, solar, and storage to meet demand for 1/5 of the USA electric grid.
< 28 billion combinations of wind, solar and storage were run, seeking least-cost.
< Least-cost combinations have excess generation (3x load), thus require less storage.
< 99.9% of hours of load can be met by renewables with only 9-72 h of storage.
< At 2030 technology costs, 90% of load hours are met at electric costs below today’s.

This is what the future could look like.

  1. Why can this not happen? Because the pockets of the fossil fuels industries are being lined by PJM et al. We the rate payers are the sheep for the fleecing in this scenario. Perhaps PJM will buy the naming rights to a stadium and name it CONSUMING SUCKERS’ STADIUM AT CASH COW FIELD. Danny Lutz p.lutz007@gmail.com
